Olympic Football: Morocco fans invade pitch in protest after Argentina win
Fans stormed the pitch after Argentina scored a late winner in the opening match of the Olympic football tournament in Saint-Etienne on Wednesday.
The incident happened in the 89th minute of the match, which Argentina won 1-0. A group of Moroccan fans ran onto the pitch and surrounded the referee, protesting the goal.
The referee was forced to stop the match for several minutes while security guards escorted the fans off the pitch. The match eventually resumed and Argentina held on to win.
The incident is the latest in a series of crowd disturbances at sporting events in recent years. In 2021, fans stormed the pitch at the end of the European Championship final at Wembley Stadium, forcing the match to be abandoned.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has condemned the incident and said it will investigate the matter. The IOC said it is committed to ensuring that the Olympic Games are a safe and secure event for all participants and spectators.
