The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary defines exploitation as "the act of using someone or something unfairly for your own advantage."

There are four meanings listed in the OED's entry for the noun exploitation:

  1. The act of using something to one's own advantage, especially in a way that is considered unfair or unethical.
  2. The action or fact of treating someone unfairly in order to benefit from their labor or resources.
  3. The use of something for one's own benefit, without regard for the rights or interests of others.
  4. The taking advantage of a person or situation for one's own gain.

Verb

To exploit someone or something is to make use of them for your own ends, often in a way that is considered unfair or unethical. Exploitation can take many forms, including:

  • Taking advantage of someone's weakness or vulnerability
  • Using someone's labor or resources without paying them fairly
  • Tricking someone into giving up something of value
  • Using someone's name or likeness without their permission
